Marlet set for return to Fulham

14 April 2012

Steve Marlet has not ruled out returning to England after Marseille turned down the chance to extend his two-year loan, though it is almost certain he will never play again for Fulham.

The striker, who joined Fulham for a club record £11.5million in 2001 but left after falling out with manager Chris Coleman, is understood to be interested in playing for another Premiership team, particularly one in London.

Marlet is unlikely to stay in France because of his £40,000-a-week wage demands.

A Fulham spokesperson said: "We've had some inquiries about him [Marlet] but he's not a Fulham player until 1 July [because Marseille retain his registration until then] and then it's a decision for the boss as to his future."

If Fulham fail to off-load Marlet, they could seek to reach an agreement with him over the remaining one year of his contract, which is worth over £2m.
