Maldini off to bad start

14 April 2012

Referee Pierluigi Collina sent off AC Milan captain Paolo Maldini as the European champions started their Serie A campaign with a 2-0 win over promoted Ancona last night.

Two goals by Andriy Shevchenko won the match but the flashpoint came 15 minutes after the interval when Ancona defender Fabio Bilica reacted to a Maldini foul and the two players shoved each other earning red cards.

He has scored 46 goals in 70 internationals and needs 50 more to beat Pele's total of 95. Ronaldo said: "I want to get nearer Pele's total, that is my big motivation."

  • Argentine football clubs Boca Juniors and Chacarita Juniors blamed "non-existent" police security for riots that injured at least 72 people and forced their latest match to be abandoned.
