Maguire's victory sets up a meeting with Hendry

14 April 2012

Stephen Maguire improved his already outstanding record this season by reaching the second round of the Welsh Open snooker tournament in Newport.

Maguire set up a clash with fellow Scot and seven-times world champion Stephen Hendry by beating Stuart Bingham 5-3.

It means that in five world-ranking events this season, Maguire has won 16 of his 18 matches, including victory in the UK Championship.

Maguire, one of the favourites to pocket the £35,000 first prize and become only the 11th player to capture back-to-back ranking titles, will meet Hendry in tournament play for the first time even though they are regular practice partners.
