Magnusson promises patience

12 April 2012

West Ham chairman Eggert Magnusson has vowed to be "very patient" with new manager Alan Curbishley - and back him with the money to turn things around at Upton Park.

Former trainee Curbishley returned to the east-London club as manager earlier this week - just days after former boss Alan Pardew had been sacked. Magnusson initially threw his support behind Pardew following the Icelandic takeover, before then wielding the axe in the wake of the 4-0 defeat at Bolton, but insists he is fully behind Curbishley.

"I hope he will stay for a long time and I am sure he will be a success," he told BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme. "I will be very patient because I know the Premiership is difficult and it takes time to build a strong side. It is very tough and it is obvious what we have to do this season - and that is to stay in the Premiership. I fully believe Alan Curbishley is the right man for that job."

Curbishley is likely to want to strengthen the squad when the January transfer window opens, with his old Charlton player Darren Bent reportedly top of the shopping list.

Magnusson said: "Within reason he will get the money he needs. I am not saying any figures - but he will get the money he needs.

"Alan has to tell me what players he wants and who he needs to accomplish what we are out for this season - and that is to stay in the Premiership."
