London won't take 2019 World Athletics Championships

13 April 2012

London could not host the 2019 World Championships if their bid to stage the 2017 finals fails, says UK Athletics chairman Ed Warner.

The International Association of Athletics Federations' vote for 2017 is being held in Monaco on Friday with London up against Doha, and some council members believe they should award that event to one city and the 2019 one to the other.

But Warner said London was only in a position to accept the 2017 championships - and it is understood that Doha would also prefer that year as they do not want a clash with their bid for the 2020 Olympics.

Warner said: "We are in no position to accept 2019 if we were offered it. We have a coalition of funding partners and it would take many months to get an answer and we could not guarantee to the IAAF we would accept."
