Lomu back home

14 April 2012

Jonah Lomu is home only six days after a lifesaving kidney transplant at Auckland City Hospital.

All Blacks rugby star Lomu, 29, received a kidney from a donor identified today as Wellington radio star Grant Kereama. The transplant came a year after Lomu suffered renal failure due to potentially fatal illness nephritis.

Doctors said it may be three months before it is known whether the transplant has been successful. Kereama had hoped his identity would remain a secret but said: "I had two kidneys and am in great health. Jonah was not well and was in need of one. It was simple for me. It's a private pact between Jonah and me."

Lomu, once rugby's highest-paid player, is likely to be housebound for several weeks.

He wanted to play for New Zealand at the 2007 World Cup but doctors are divided on his chances of resuming his career.
