Lockyer open to Super League offers

12 April 2012

The prospect of Australia captain Darren Lockyer playing in Super League moved a step closer on Saturday when he revealed he has authorised his management team to seek offers from English clubs.

Lockyer, who is out of contract this year, is due to begin talks over a new deal with Brisbane on Monday but insists there is no guarantee he will wear Broncos colours beyond this season.

"We're looking at kick-starting talks with Brisbane immediately and we'll see where that takes us," Lockyer told the Brisbane Courier Mail. "I'll talk to Brisbane first but I'll also sound out England. It does have appeal to both (wife) Loren and me to do something different for a year or two."

He continued: "In saying that, we're really happy living here in Brisbane.

"Towards the end of last year I made the decision to play beyond 2009 - for how many more years I'm not 100% sure."

Broncos chief executive Bruno Cullen said: "We would like to keep 'Locky' but it would be very hard to match the money on offer in England."

Hull KR have already expressed an interest in Lockyer but Wigan, who recently failed in bids to sign Australian half-backs Todd Carney and Greg Bird, are likely to be favourites to land his prized signature if he heads for England.
