Levet clinches British Masters after play-off

13 April 2012

Frenchman Thomas Levet defied pre-tournament odds of 125/1 to clinch victory after a four-man play-off at the Victor Chandler British Masters at Woburn.

Six days after 150/1 outsider Andrew Oldcorn won the Volvo PGA Championship, Levet struck another blow for the rank outsiders with a birdie on the third extra hole.

An eight-foot putt earned Levet the £208,330 first prize - four times the previous biggest cheque of his career.

Robert Karlsson and David Howell had gone out with bogeys at the first extra hole and Levet, missing a five-footer there, was left to fight it out with another Swede, Mathias Gronberg.

Levet then stayed alive with an eight-footer on the second play-off before repeating the feat on the next to win.

The quartet had all finished on the 14 under par total of 274, Levet also holing a six-footer on the final green to match the target set by Gronberg.

Karlsson and Howell then holed from 10 and eight feet respectively to join them in the first four-man play-off on the European tour since the 1993 Honda Open.

Levet had been 50/1 even at the start of the last round, when he resumed four behind Howell.
