Levein: Lithuania opener is key

Scotland manager Craig Levein admits he is more concerned about facing Lithuania than taking on world champions Spain in their Euro 2012 qualifiers.

The Scots open their campaign with a trip to Kaunas - Levein's first competitive game in charge - and he believes a good start is essential. And that is why the national team boss will put any thoughts about the visit of Spain on the backburner until October, when the World Cup winners visit Hampden.

"I'm not worried about playing them (Spain) at Hampden. What I'm concerned with is getting it right for Lithuania. That is a massive game - we need to get off to a positive start," said Levein.

"The players will have a great occasion in the match against Spain.

"The Spaniards have played at the highest level for 36 months without a break so at some point it has to catch up with them.

"I'm not saying it will catch up with them for a tournament but it might for a game or two."

Levein began his tenure with a friendly victory over the Czech Republic back in March and Scotland travel to Sweden next month before the action begins for real.

Levein added: "It's 12 years now since we qualified for anything. It will take time but once you get on the slippery slope it's hard to stop.

"However, I believe in my squad. Attitude is everything. If players don't want to turn up and play then we're not going to succeed."
