Leonard backing Andrew to succeed

12 April 2012

World Cup winner Jason Leonard is backing former England team-mate Rob Andrew to make a major impact in his new RFU role.

Andrew, unveiled in August as the RFU's elite rugby director, has been handed the task of developing players for the international stage.

"I think he will do a great job," said Leonard. "He has been on both sides of the fence. He has been there as a player, so he knows the demands and the rigours of the international game."

The former Harlequins star added: "He has been there as a director of rugby (Newcastle) - the longest serving director of rugby in professional rugby for 12 years - he knows the club side of it and the demands that can make.

"He is brilliant as an administrator, he is slowly, but surely getting his feet under the table at the RFU and I think he will go out with the ambition to give everyone with England - not just the players, but (coach) Andy Robinson - the tools for the job and as much preparation as possible.

"I think he will do very well. He is a great acquisition for the RFU. Rob is very good, he is a very honest and open guy and his appointment can only be great for all parties."
