Leeds win summit battle

12 April 2012

England winger Ryan Hall grabbed a brace of tries as defending Super League champions Leeds put one hand on the League Leaders' Shield with an 18-10 win over St Helens.

Victory in a gripping Grand Final re-match that lived up to all expectations in front of a 19,997 Headingley crowd took the Rhinos two points clear of their arch rivals with one round of the regular season left to play.

It means Leeds need only avoid a heavy defeat in their last match at lowly Salford next Friday to ensure they go into the play-offs in pole position as they seek to wrap up a hat-trick of Super League titles.

Carl Ablett bagged the Rhinos' other try while Kevin Sinfield converted two of the three scores.

Lee Gilmour and Chris Flannery were the try scorers for Saints with Kyle Eastmond landing a conversion.

Amos Roberts and George Carmont scored two tries each as Wigan saw off Hull 34-22 to claim a home tie in the play-offs.

The Warriors were forced to dig deep by a Hull side fighting hard to preserve their own faint top-eight hopes, but Sam Tomkins and Iafeta Paleaaesina ended their post-season aspirations late on.

Hull had briefly led through former Wigan forward Danny Tickle as the game came to life after 30 scoreless minutes, but the Warriors just proved too strong.
