Lee serves up another shock

Chris Jones13 April 2012

Britain's Martin Lee proved again how much he loves the Miller Lite Hall of Fame tennis championships in Newport, Rhode Island, by recording an outstanding 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory over second seeded Australian Wayne Arthurs.

Lee, beaten in last year's final by Neville Godwin, defied big-serving Arthurs, who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon before losing to eventual finalist David Nalbandian.

Lee was beaten in the Wimbledon first round by Pete Sampras and entered this tournament as the 122nd ranked player in the world.

Meanwhile, French Open champion Albert Costa lost his first match back since his triumph at Roland Garros, crashing out in the opening round of the Swiss Open to Paul-Henri Mathieu.

Frenchman Mathieu, who had to qualify for the event, upset the top seed 6-4, 6-3.

In the first round of the Swedish Open in Basted, local favourite Magnus Norman beat his eighthseeded compatriot Jonas Bjorkman 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Norman, who reached the French Open final two years ago before suffering a severe hip injury, looked an unlikely winner when Bjorkman took the first set and then broke serve to lead 2-0 in the second.

Top seed Guillermo Canas, of Argentina, defeated Swedish clay court specialist Andreas Vinciguerra 6-4, 6-2. Spanish third seed Carlos Moya beat Belgium's Olivier Rochus 6-3, 6-4.
