Lawrie quick to catch Faldo

Crans-sur-Sierre, high up in the Swiss Alps, became the battleground for two former Open champions today.

Nick Faldo, a three-time winner of The Open, set the early pace with three birdies and an eagle en route to a five-under 66 in the first round of the Omega European Masters.

But he was then joined at the top by 1999 Open champion Paul Lawrie, who fired five birdies in his first 10 holes this afternoon.
