Knockout blow for British boxing trio

13 April 2012

The Olympic dreams for three British boxers appear over after they were cut from the full-time podium squad.

London light-heavyweight Obed Mbwakongo, heavyweight Danny Price and flyweight Tommy Stubbs have been cut from the British Amateur Boxing Association squad, which was started 18 months ago for London 2012.

Mbwakongo suffered his sixth consecutive loss at last month's European Championships while neither Price from Scarborough nor Oldham-based Stubbs has made enough progress.

The decision means the squad are without a light-heavyweight heading towards the World Championships - which double as the first Olympic qualifier - in Baku in September.

Performance director Rob McCracken has invited new ABA cruiserweight champion Deion Jumah for a trial with the squad in Sheffield.
