Khan still slow on the uptake

Simon Khan began the defence of his Wales Open title at Celtic Manor today hoping to get back in the headlines for all the right reasons.

Khan was the first player to suffer under the European Tour's clampdown on slow play when hit with an £8,000 fine during last month's Irish Open.

The 32-year-old Englishman admitted he had not studied the new tougher regulations closely enough.

"I still do not feel I am one of the slowest," said Khan, who was fined £2,000 on his way to victory last year.

"I know my routine. Once I pick a club up it takes about 18 seconds to hit a normal shot, so I should never get a bad time."
