Khan parts company with Rubio

12 April 2012

Amir Khan has fired trainer Jorge Rubio after just one fight together following the first defeat of his career earlier this month.

The 21-year-old Commonwealth lightweight champion lost his unbeaten record when he was spectacularly knocked out by Breidis Prescott on September 6.

Not only did Rubio oversee that first defeat, it was also revealed afterwards the Cuban actually suggested Prescott as a suitable opponent for the Bolton fighter before watching him destroy Khan in just 54 seconds.

A spokesman for Khan's promoter, Frank Warren's Sports Network, said: "Jorge has been relieved of his duties."

Khan sacked Salford trainer Oliver Harrison early this year and then surprisingly announced Cuban Rubio as his new coach this summer despite being linked with a host of top names including Freddie Roach.

No new trainer has been confirmed yet - American Roach is thought to be in the frame again - and Khan's camp will make a statement on the matter next week.
