Kewell faces lengthy spell out

14 April 2012

Liverpool midfielder Harry Kewell has admitted he does not expect to return to action until March.

Kewell, who has yet to win over the Anfield fans since his £5million move from Leeds three years ago, is in his native Australia and receiving treatment for groin problems and septic arthritis, which caused a bacterial infection to his left foot.

He last played in the World Cup Finals in Germany in the summer and sees no prospect of an early return.

He said: "It's going to be a while. We're looking past February. My foot is a bit sore at the moment and my groin is a bit sore, too.

"But the surgeons are very happy. I will meet them again on Friday and if they give me the all-clear I'm back off to England."

Liverpool team-mate Robbie Fowler hopes Wednesday's Carling Cup goal against Reading will lead to a starting place at home to Aston Villa tomorrow.

He said: "I don't know what to expect. I hope I'll be involved but it's not me who decides. I said when I came back I just wanted to enjoy every minute I get playing for Liverpool."
