Kev forced to let Jensen go

13 April 2012

Kevin Keegan said he was left with no choice but to let Niclas Jensen leave Manchester City after refusing the Danish full-back an extension to his contract.

The 28-year-old's £750,000 move to Borussia Dortmund this week caught most City fans by surprise given Jensen's consistent performances throughout last season.

However, Keegan has revealed he turned down the player's request for a new three-year deal, maintaining a stance he has taken over long-term contracts, which has also frustrated Eyal Berkovic this summer.

"I would have liked Niclas to stay but having said I wasn't going to offer him another three-year deal, I couldn't then turn round and say I wasn't prepared to let him go," admitted Keegan. "He is not a greedy boy but he was coming into the last year and I wasn't prepared to offer him the three years that he wanted."
