Ken supports Picketts Lock

Plans to stage the World Athletics Championships at Picketts Lock, Edmonton, received a boost today when the Mayor of London Ken Livingstone said he wouldn't oppose the new 43,000 seater stadium and training complex.

The £93 million project is still in the balance after the plans were referred to a government review headed by Patrick Carter.

His report is due to be presented to the lottery award body Sport England and Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell later this week with a final decision taken by the end of the month, but insiders are already indicating that the plans are set to be scrapped.

Despite that, Livingstone who has the final say on all major planning developments in the capital, has said that he will not stand in the way if the scheme gets the go-ahead first from the government and then from Enfield Council.

The planning application is due to go before councillors on 12 September.
