Keeping key trio is Gazidis's first task

Arsenal'S new chief executive Ivan Gazidis starts work in January with the immediate task of securing the futures of three key players.

Gazidis, the former deputy commissioner of Major League Soccer, will be looking to tie Theo Walcott, Robin van Persie and Cesc Fabregas to long-term deals.

Talks with Van Persie and Walcott have been progressing well but no new deal has yet been proposed to Fabregas.

Walcott has 18 months left to run on his current deal, while Van Persie is pondering a new £80,000-a-week, five-year contract.

Fabregas has a deal until 2014 but it is understood he could buy himself out of that contract in January 2010 under FIFA rules once he has served three years of a deal signed in 2006.

Another pressing matter for Gazidis will be helping to complete the sale of lots at Highbury Square, the property development built on Arsenal's former ground and a pivotal factor in the club's future stability.

The club's fans today welcomed the appointment of Gazidis. Arsenal Supporters' Trust (AST) chief Tim Payton claimed recruiting him was a positive move for the Gunners, especially in negotiating new contracts for the three prized assets.

He said: "We note his experience in managing player contracts, a skill-set that we hope he will soon put to use. This is a vital appointment.

"We also recognise the role Ken Friar has played as acting managing director and are grateful to him for the time he has given to working with us."
