Juventus moved to the top of Champions League Group H with a fine 2-1 win against Real Madrid last night but the match was overshadowed by events off the field, writes Andrew Hodgson.

A minute's silence was held before kick-off after a traffic accident in the Italian Alps claimed the lives of two Juventus fans and injured 20 more.

Alessandro del Piero put the hosts ahead in the fifth minute before Amauri doubled the lead shortly after the restart. Ruud van Nistelrooy replied for Real Madrid.

Elsewhere in Group H, Zenit St Petersburg got their first point with a 1-1 draw at home to BATE Borisov.

Arsenal's Group G rivals Dynamo Kiev are two points behind Arsene Wenger's side after they claimed their first Champions League win in almost four years against Porto.

Oleksandr Aliev's wicked first-half free-kick separated the sides at the Estadio do Dragao.

Villarreal have emerged as the main threat to Manchester United in Group E after a 6-3 win against Aalborg, with former Arsenal star Robert Pires among the scorers.

In Group F, Karim Benzema and Fred grabbed braces as Lyon twice came from behind to emerge victorious in an eight-goal thriller against Steaua Bucharest.

That moves the French side into second place in the group behind Bayern Munich, who saw off Fiorentina 3-0.
