Justin Rose wilts in defence of title

Justin Rose's defence of his Volvo Masters title is in tatters after an opening nine-over-par 80 at Valderrama today left him in last place.

The world No16 described his performance as "terrible" as he lay 14 strokes behind leader Soren Kjeldsen, of Denmark.

Rose won the Order of Merit last year but he is now a lowly 81st in the standings.

Robert Karlsson, in pole position to replace him as European No1, and his main rival Padraig Harrington both started badly and were one over par after two.
