Jones a doubt for England

14 April 2012

Geraint Jones will be at the centre of the selectors' concerns when they announce their squad for this week's third npower Test against Pakistan at Headingley.

The Kent wicketkeeper has long been the target for England's critics, initially for his sub-standard glovework behind the stumps but more recently for his failure to contribute runs at number seven. But for the first time since he replaced Chris Read behind the stumps 30 Tests ago, Jones' place is more under threat for his fitness after suffering a fractured right ring finger in Manchester.

Coach Duncan Fletcher would prefer to keep a winning line-up, but admitted: "We'll have to look at the injury."

He added: "He has kept (wicket) very well. He's kept outstandingly well for these last two games. The only trouble is that sometimes as an all-rounder it's difficult.

"You can bat well, but not bowl well or you bowl well and you don't bat well. That happens when you're an all-rounder in the side.

"I think he knows he is going to have to get some runs, there is no doubt he has got to get runs, but I thought he kept outstandingly in the last game."

The selectors could consider recalling Read as cover for Jones when they announce the squad later today, but Fletcher will be loathe to make a change unless absolutely necessary.
