Jol: Europe is within our grasp

14 April 2012

Tottenham's recent form has persuaded head coach Martin Jol to reassess his modest ambitions and the reluctant Dutchman even admitted European qualification is not beyond his side.

A fortnight ago Jol conceded a top-half finish was the best he could realistically hope for but three consecutive Barclays Premiership victories, and three clean sheets, later the spirits have been lifted.

Tottenham will chase a fourth consecutive victory for the first time since 1995 when Southampton visit White Hart Lane tomorrow.

"We have won three league games. If you win games, people are happy. Two weeks ago I was thinking if we do not win our games we could be in an awkward situation. At that time I was happy to be in the first 10," said Jol.

"But now, maybe we can go places. The players have to do the business, get the points, help themselves and the club move forward.

"That is our slogan - 'Let's do the business'. The players are in charge out there on the pitch."

Southampton arrive at White Hart Lane under Harry Redknapp, who quit Portsmouth after chairman Milan Mandaric brought in director of football Velimir Zajec against his wishes.

Jol has always been quick to extoll the virtues of employing a director of football - as Tottenham have in the shape of Frank Arnesen - but the supporters were sceptical when the structure was first unveiled by chairman Daniel Levy.

The continental management style has never really succeeded on these shores and that nervousness was enhanced when Jacques Santini walked out as head coach only three months into the season.

But Jol has begun to turn the ship around and said: "I am very happy. I don't know what their motives were at Portsmouth, but here the motives for introducing a new structure were right and it is working.

"I like to think we are doing well."

Winger Reto Ziegler trained yesterday after suffering a hamstring injury and will be assessed later today but remains a doubt. Pedro Mendes is also touch and go as he battles back from a knee injury.

Noureddine Naybet, who was replaced at half-time in the win over Manchester City, is out with a groin injury while Stephen Kelly is still recovering from medial ligament damage.
