Medical mess: Andy Johnson sprints for the ball against Derby last season

Andy Johnson's record £13million move to is in doubt after an X-ray flagged up an old injury.

The striker's medical problem emerged after checks on his history reveal it is a problem he has had for years and before he went to Merseyside, reports The Daily Mirror.

Fulham - who were set to pay a club record fee for the England star - are struggling to get insurance cover for the former England forward and are also renegotiating terms with Everton about the method of payment.

The clubs are working overtime to save the deal, with Everton needing the cash for their own signings and Fulham keen to have a player they see as key to staying out of the relegation fight.

The west Londoners have had major problems in the past with players signing and then having injuries and their money men want to be sure this deal does not leave them in trouble.

Everton are quite relaxed and insiders believe the transfer will still go ahead, but with a major pay-as-you-play element.

There could yet be problems with Johnson if he was asked to settle for a similar arrangement. He is due to collect about £50,000 a week from the move and would be reluctant to take a cut.

Johnson is staying in London as the talks go on, with Fulham hoping Everton accept the adjustment - they did the same themselves when they ran into problems with Joleon Lescott's medical when he joined from Wolves.
