Joe Gray hopes a quick turnaround and having little to lose will help Harlequins bounce back from the 35-5 defeat to bottom side London Irish at the Stoop on Saturday, which left them with a “pretty bleak changing room”.

The victory was just Irish’s third win of the season and keeps their faint hopes of survival alive.

Quins sit ninth and travel to Gloucester on Saturday with much to prove and improve on.

Hooker Gray said: “It’s great to be able in seven days’ time to try to put a lot of wrongs right. It’s a pretty bleak changing room and everyone knows that’s nowhere near our standards and nowhere near where we want to be.

“We need to address them [Saturday’s errors] then put that to bed and come out the blocks firing. We don’t have anything to lose.”

The increasingly under-fire Quins director of rugby John Kingston questioned his side’s work ethic after the game and Gray promised they would “need to be pretty brutal” in some “honest” training sessions this week.

“We know that’s not good enough,” said Gray. “We didn’t front up, it was a really poor day as a squad. It’s not what we expect, it’s not what they [fans] should expect, they need to know we will be working as hard as we can to put things right.”
