Jewell: My Dowd rant is costing Latics

12 April 2012

Wigan manager Paul Jewell feels his rant at Phil Dowd has resulted in a degree of victimisation from Premiership officials.

Jewell was handed a two-match touchline ban, suspended for 12 months, and a £2,000 fine for his finger-pointing blast at Dowd following Wigan's 2-1 defeat at Arsenal on February 11, but he believes his side have been further punished by a series of decisions which have gone against the Latics.

He said: "I think the worst thing I ever did was speak out about the referee at Arsenal because we've not had a decision since, and we've also had a couple of players sent off. Penalties have gone against us and so too have offsides."

In the match which followed the game against the Gunners, Fitz Hall was controversially dismissed early on in a 1-1 draw at Watford.

A debatable penalty decision then went against Wigan in a 1-0 loss to Charlton at The Valley, while on Monday a crucial offside was not spotted which allowed Aston Villa to equalise in a 1-1 draw.

The results have led to vital points dropped in the club's battle for survival which sees them just three points above the relegation zone.

"The Villa goal was three yards offside and the linesman on the other side of the pitch was the one we had at the Emirates for the Arsenal game," Jewell said in the Manchester Evening News.

Mindful of overstepping the mark in light of previous FA action, Jewell joked: "I'd better be careful what I say because I'm beginning to sound like Neil Warnock!"

The 42-year-old Wigan boss is also awaiting a personal hearing for his post-match comments with regard to Dowd and his performance.
