Jewell backs successor Hutchings

12 April 2012

Former Wigan boss Paul Jewell believes the club have made the right choice in appointing Chris Hutchings as their new manager.

Hutchings was quickly promoted from assistant boss by chairman Dave Whelan after Jewell's surprise resignation and the former Latics manager insists Hutchings is "good enough" for the Latics.

He told Sky Sports News: "A lot of people are talking about big names - but Chris knows the game and club inside out, he's good and honest, he's got good knowledge, he's a good coach."

Hutchings lasted just 137 days in charge of Bradford after taking the job when Jewell left in the wake of the Bantams' great escape from relegation in 2000.

And Jewell continued: "He was probably sacked too early at Bradford - but when I got the job at Bradford a lot of people were moaning about me. He's good enough and I hope he goes on from strength to strength."

Jewell also insisted he will not be taking over as manager of Manchester City.

Bookmakers made the 42-year-old favourite to take over the Eastlands hot-seat, following City's sacking of Stuart Pearce and his own resignation at Wigan on Monday.

But the Liverpudlian insists he has nothing planned for the summer, other than "recharging the batteries".
