13 April 2012

Jamie Cooke set a world record in his second successive modern pentathlon competition at the European Championships in Kent today.

The 20-year-old Briton took more than two seconds off his previous swimming short-course best for the 200m freestyle, clocking 1min 50.5sec to finished more than eight seconds ahead of his nearest rival in one semi-final group.

Three weeks ago, Cooke set a new long-course record when he demolished the field at the World Cup Final in London.

He said: "I felt really good so I just went for it."

In the other semi-final group, Nick Woodbridge was sixth after the fencing phase.

The final is on Saturday, where the leading eight athletes will achieve the qualifying standard for the Olympics.
