ITV get England game

14 April 2012

ITV have won the rights to show delayed coverage on England's match in Turkey on October 11.

The channel can show full delayed coverage or highlights at any time following the final whistle of the game in Istanbul after Sky accepted a cash offer.

Brian Barwick, ITV'S controller of sport, said: "We're delighted to be able to provide terrestrial viewers with the opportunity to watch coverage of such a key England match and play our part in ensuring that as many viewers see it as possible."

Sky had paid £3million for the exclusive rights to the final match in the European Championship qualifying group, where England only need a draw to qualify for the finals in Portugal next summer.

The satellite broadcaster made delayed rights available to terrestrial television after a call from sports minister Richard Caborn but made it clear they would expect those channels interested to stump up a reasonable amount of money.

ITV will confirm transmission times later this week and the England match will add to a busy sporting weekend on the station.

They are also showing seven rugby World Cup matches on ITV1 and ITV2 and the Japanese Grand Prix, the culmination of the Formula One season.
