Italian players take stand over violence

13 April 2012

Italian league matches will kick off 15 minutes late this weekend in protest against the increasing violence in and around stadiums - and team captains will make speeches emphasising "the right to lose".

The country's football authorities have backed a proposal from the players' union to take a stand against a growing number of incidents.

Serie A clubs Reggina and Napoli have been banned from their stadiums this season after violent behaviour by fans.

Last week, a petrol bomb was thrown at the Inter Milan team bus before their Italian Cup tie against Parma. Italian Football League president Franco Carraro said: "Now is the time to say, with strength, 'enough'."

FIFA, football's world governing body, are going to pay £7,000 to each of the families of the 13 fans who died in a stampede during a World Cup qualifier.

South Africa were leading 2-0 against Zimbabwe with 10 minutes remaining when the tie was abandoned due to rioting.
