Italian club sack golden goal hero

13 April 2012

South Korea's World Cup golden goal hero Ahn Jung-hwan has been sacked by his Italian club Perugia.

Ahn's brilliant header knocked Italy out of the tournament after yesterday's second round clash with Korea at Daejeon went into extra time.

The goal might have won the hearts of millions of his countrymen and women, but it turned Perugia president Luciano Gaucci's heart to stone.

Gaucci today accused the 26-year-old midfielder of insulting Italy and biting the hand that feeds him.

"When he came to us he was quiet, he did not even have money to buy a sandwich," Gaucci told the Italian press.

"He has become rich without supplying any exceptional performances.

"I have given orders for him not to return to the club.

"I have no intention of paying a salary to someone who has ruined Italian soccer."

"I am angry. He has only stood out in the World Cup when he has faced Italy.

"This behaviour is an offence for a country that two years ago opened the doors to him.

"I will not renew him (his contract), he does not deserve it."Ahn joined Perugia in the 2000-2001 season on loan from Pusan Icons.

His contract in Italy runs out on June 30.

He made 15 appearances for Perugia last season and scored only once.
