Is world No.1 Andy Murray Britain's greatest-ever individual sportsperson?

1/60
James Benge7 November 2016

It has been quite some time since Andy Murray secured his place as Britain’s greatest male tennis player, or at least since Fred Perry, but where does the new world number one rank among his country’s finest individual athletes?

Two Wimbledon titles, as many gold medals, the US Open crown from 2012 and a first Davis Cup crown in 79 years is a remarkable trophy haul and one made all the more impressive for being won in the era of Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Murray is now the favourite not only to crown his year with victory in the ATP World Tour Finals in London but to claim the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award for the third time, a record that would place him ahead of Nigel Mansell, Henry Cooper and Damon Hill.

In a year of exceptional British sporting achievement, it would be one final victory for a man who has made quite the habit of beating the competition since this summer’s second Wimbledon triumph.

Where does Murray rank in Britain’s sporting pantheon?
