Hussain never trusted me - Salisbury

13 April 2012

Ian Salisbury feels he was not given the chance to perform by England captain Nasser Hussain during the tour of Pakistan and that is one of the reasons why he did not make the current party in Sri Lanka.

The Surrey leg-spinner made more of a mark with the bat than the ball in Pakistan, but would have relished the chance to prove his worth at his more recognised art form.

Salisbury told Radio 5 Live that he felt Hussain could have shown more faith in his abilities.

"I was not given the chance to perform in a pressure situation," said Salisbury.

Hussain turned to Ashley Giles and Craig White in Pakistan when he needed a wicket, rather than to Salisbury.

"Sometimes in those situations when you have to perform that's when you come to the party," he said.

"I was so desperate to do well I put a lot of pressure on myself."

But Salisbury would not rule out returning to the England set-up even if some had seen his being left out of the Sri Lanka tour as a sign that his international career was over.

"If you read that into the situation it's the end of my England career, but hopefully not.

"They've written me off lots of times, I've been dropped probably more times than I've been picked."

Despite past setbacks Salisbury could not hide his disappointment at being dropped following England's 1-0 series win in Pakistan.

"I was really disappointed but I've come to terms with it now," he said.

"I felt as though I played my part in winning the Test series but probably not in the way I should have done.

"I worked really hard for two years to get back into the England side.

"I was working on a few new things with the England coach Duncan Fletcher. To get back to the elation and then to be told you are not going away (to Sri Lanka) just before Christmas was not the present I wanted."
