Hussain likely to return for England

Nasser Hussain looks ready to give his fellow England selectors some long overdue good news on the injury front.

It was only against Notts reserves and there were no Australians around but Hussain batted with ease when he made a competitive comeback one month after fracturing his left little finger.

England's captain, who was struck by a Jason Gillespie delivery during the First Test at Edgbaston, has had to watch another Ashes challenge being blown away.

But, after making an undefeated 24 and spending nearly an hour at the crease for Essex second XI in Halstead, Hussain was hoping to declare himself ready for an international return.

It seems unlikely, however, that Hussain will be joined by the other injury casualties, Michael Vaughan (knee) and Graham Thorpe (hand) as England try to prevent Australia recording another victory.

England's decision to rest most of their contracted players has come under fresh attack.

"I am concerned that they mollycoddle these players too much," said Lancashire chairman Jack Simmons after being told that Mike Atherton was not available. "How do you get better as a player? You do it by playing in the middle."
