Newcastle boss Chris Hughton saluted his players after they secured their return to the Barclays Premier League without kicking a ball.

Nottingham Forest's failure to beat Cardiff sent the Magpies back up to the top flight at the first attempt ahead of their home clash with Sheffield United.

Speaking ahead of kick-off, Hughton told the club's official website, www.nufc.co.uk: "This is a wonderful achievement and we are absolutely delighted."

He added: "That we have secured promotion with six games to spare is testament to this set of players and how good a season they have had.

"This is what we have been building towards all season and I'm delighted for everyone associated with the club."

Goals from Peter Lovenkrands and Kevin Nolan saw the Magpies celebrate their promotion with a 2-1 victory over Kevin Blackwell's side.
