Amanda Janes (World ranking 246) The daughter of former French Open champion Christine Truman was not disgraced in defeat against Wimbledon No4 seed Amelie Mauresmo at Eastbourne. Smith said: "She is difficult to play against, particularly for someone who is not that comfortable on grass." Wimbledon best: Not played before.

Elena Baltacha (World ranking 331) The 20-year-old made the third round in 2002, but has since suffered with injury. Emily-Webley Smith (World ranking 349) Lost in the first round at Birmingham this month, but the 19-year-old has recorded notable victories at minor events in Surbiton and Mexico in recent months.
