Hopkins fight 'close' for Calzaghe

12 April 2012

Joe Calzaghe is "very close" to tying up a deal to fight Bernard Hopkins, according to his promoter Frank Warren.

The Welshman, who was voted the BBC Sports Personality of the Year on Sunday night following his unification of the super-middleweight division, has long been known to be keen on a step up to light-heavyweight to face the American veteran.

"We are very close to closing the deal and I hope within a week we will have it done," Warren told BBC Radio Five Live.

He added: "I'll be sitting down with Joe this week to discuss things. Both boxers want the fight."

Warren revealed previously that an offer had been made to the 42-year-old who dominated the middleweight division for a decade.

Calzaghe, 35, and Hopkins became embroiled in a face-off at a media event ahead of the Ricky Hatton and Floyd Mayweather fight, when the American claimed: "I'll never let a white boy beat me."

The Briton responded: "I've been chasing the fight with Hopkins for years but he's always backed down.

"He promised to make the fight this time and I'm happy to come to America to make it happen."
