Hodgson rescues draw for Giants

Nerveless Brett Hodgson kicked a late penalty from the touchline to hand Huddersfield a share of the spoils in a fraught 16-16 draw with rivals Hull KR.

Michael Dobson's two late penalties looked to have handed Hull KR a welcome victory on the road after a dismal run of five successive away defeats. Yet the Giants refused to lie down and, after having had two late tries disallowed by the video referee, they drew level with virtually the last kick of the game as Hodgson again underlined his importance to the home side.

The Giants had come from 12-0 down to forge 14-12 ahead going into the final quarter following tries from Michael Lawrence and Kevin Brown, plus three goals from Hodgson. That put them on course for a third victory over the season over the Robins, but Justin Morgan's men dominated the last 20 minutes and looked to have emerged victorious until Hodgson's late intervention.

Hull cemented their position in fourth place but were pushed harder than they would have expected to be by the Engage Super League's bottom side before finally edging to a 10-8 victory over Catalans Dragons.

Richard Agar's side wasted a number of fine attacking opportunities in the first half and went into the break tied at eight-all, before the roles were reversed and the Catalans began to dominate proceedings.

The loss of Hull captain Sean Long with a nasty-looking arm injury looked to have given the French side the upper hand, before Danny Tickle kicked a conversion from out wide with 15 minutes to go to give the home side the lead.

They held on to it too thanks to some stunning goal-line defence, although Dragons boss Kevin Walters will rue his side's failure to convert several glorious chances, with poor decisions from their halves, most notably Brent Sherwin, costing them a fourth win of the season.

Paul Wellens notched four tries as St Helens eased to victory against Salford to record their 11th win in their last 13 matches.

But despite the result, lowly Reds turned in a plucky show scoring six touchdowns.

Leon Pryce, with two tries, was in dominant form for Saints, while Jonny Lomax booted nine goals from 10 attempts.
