Hoddle swoops for Pirate

Glenn Hoddle: impressed by Mbulelo Mabizela

Glenn Hoddle was so impressed by South African defender Mbulelo Mabizela that he has brought him back to London to sign for the club.

The 22-year-old Orlando Pirates captain played in the 2-1 victory against Spurs on Saturday and flew back with Hoddle's team last night from Johannesburg.

A Spurs spokesman said: "Mbulelo Mabizela has joined the team on their flight home and it is hoped that, following successful completion of negotiations and medical, we will be able to announce his transfer."

Mabizela can play at right or centre-back and joined the Pirates in 2001 from amateur side Pietermaritzberg.

In his first year as a professional he made his debut for South Africa and has won 12 caps. He was the South African Players' Player of the Year last season.

Mabizela said: "It's a great opportunity for me to join a Premiership team. It's been my dream to play in England.

"Players like Lucas Radebe, Shaun Bartlett and Quinton Fortune have opened the gates for up-and-coming stars in South Africa. I will try my best to follow them."
