Hockey World Cup bid is 'impeccable', says Boris Johnson

13 April 2012

Boris Johnson today declared London's bid to host the 2014 Hockey World Cup will significantly enhance the sporting legacy from London 2012.

The bid has the financial backing of UK Sport and Events for London, who will inject £980,000 and £500,000 respectively should it prove successful.

Funding will also be provided by the England Hockey Board and boxing promoter Frank Warren.
Johnson, the Mayor of London, describes the bid as "impeccable".

"Hockey is one of the ways in which we are going to turn the Olympic Park into a fantastic sporting legacy," Johnson said.

"We are always talking about regeneration of housing and parks, but it will also be a place where people want to come and play sport.

"We think the cost of the 2014 bid will be easily eclipsed by the amount of revenue we bring to the city should we stage the event.

"It's an impeccable bid. I know there are some strong rival bids from around the world, but London is very strong because we have fantastic facilities."
