Henman eyes new kid

British No1 Tim Henman will put his own Tennis Masters Series challenge in Monte Carlo to one side today and join the centre court crowd to watch French tennis sensation Richard Gasquet against Argentina's Franco Squillari.

Gasquet is just 15 years old and received a wild card to play in this tournament.

Originally from Beziers but now living in Paris, where the national tennis centre is based, he made the main draw after coming through the qualifying tournament, where he beat 27-year-old seasoned professional Romanian Adrian Voinea 6-3, 6-4.

Gasquet said: "I am trying to play as many big tournaments as possible.

It was very brave of the tournament to give me a wild card."

Henman's Monte Carlo challenge is threatened at the first round stage tomorrow by another wild card - Argentina's Guillermo Coria, who reached the semi-finals here last year.

Sweden's Thomas Enqvist, the 14th seed, lost 6-1, 6-1 to in-form Juan Ignacio Chela from Argentina today while eighth seed Thomas Johansson overcome countryman Magnus Norman 2-6, 7-6, 6-1. Morocco's Hicham Arazi accounted for French favourite Arnaud Clement 6-3, 6-3.
