Henman edges into round two

13 April 2012

Tim Henman overcame the loss of the second set to scrape past Spain's Albert Costa 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in the first round of the Masters Series event in Rome.

The British No1 eased through the first set, lost his rhythm to lose the second, but used his serve and volley to good effect to win the third.

Henman will now face France's Julien Boutter, who bashed American Todd Martin 6-3, 6-3.

It proved a bad day for the big guns, however.

Defending champion Magnus Norman of Sweden was beaten 6-4, 6-3 by Italian wild card Vincenzo Santopadre.

World No1 Andre Agassi was crushed 6-3, 6-3 by Alex Calatrava of Spain, while Israel's Harel Levy put paid to the efforts of Pete Sampras 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.
