Heidfeld to drive for Williams

14 April 2012

Nick Heidfeld was today named as a Williams race driver after seeing off the challenge of Antonio Pizzonia.

The German, who drove for Jordan last year, will partner Mark Webber in the race team this year, with Pizzonia resuming his role as test driver.

Pizzonia and Heidfeld signed identical contracts with Williams several weeks ago but the team waited until the official launch of their 2005 car in Valencia today to reveal who would be racing.

Heidfeld was thrilled to have been chosen and immediately set out his goals.

He said: "It is fantastic to finally get the chance to be part of a world champion team. My goal is to win the world championship in the future. I will do my best."

Pizzonia, meanwhile, admitted his disappointment but was philosophical after Heidfeld got the nod.

He said: "Obviously I am quite disappointed with the result but I am still quite young."
