Harmison backs beaten England

12 April 2012

Steve Harmison believes things will "fall into place" for England's World Cup squad despite their disappointing start in the Caribbean.

Michael Vaughan's team lost their opening group games by six wickets to New Zealand in St Lucia on Friday, putting them at a disadvantage if, as expected, they still make it into the Super Eight stage of the competition.

Harmison, who retired from one-day international cricket in December, told BBC Radio Five Live: "It's disappointing but the lads will bounce back. The rest of it will fall into place."

He added: "Watching the batting, I think we just need to get used to batting on those wickets.

"Hopefully we'll get tuned in to playing on those wickets against the two minnow sides (Canada and Kenya) in the next two games because we can get big scores and get some confidence."

Harmison was especially encouraged by the start made by England's new-ball pairing of James Anderson and Liam Plunkett, with the Black Caps reduced to 19 for three and 72 for four before Scott Styris and Jacob Oram steered them comfortably home.

"There are positives to take out of the game," he added. "I thought we'd struggle getting wickets with the new ball - but one of the things that we did well was get wickets with the new ball."
