Harlequins trial for Calderwood

London-born former England winger Mark Calderwood is hoping to resurrect his Super League career in the capital after joining Harlequins for trials.

The 29-year-old former Leeds, Wigan and Hull flier, who played for England in the 2008 World Cup in Australia, was left without a club after Hull declined to offer him a new contract at the end of last season. But Calderwood will be given until the end of February to push for a permanent move to Harlequins.

Harlequins coach Rob Powell said: "I would like to give Mark the opportunities, through his trial, to show the quality he has in the past. I know he could to be a great addition to the squad. We need more strength in our outside backs and Mark is a great fit."

He added: "He has a wealth of experience and a proven track record to score tries. I look forward to seeing him in action and adding another dimension to what we currently have."

Calderwood three times topped the Super League tryscoring chart during his glittering career with Leeds and also had a three-year stint at Wigan before moving to Hull in 2009.

He made four appearances in an injury-disrupted season in 2010.
