Hansen dismisses 'silly' cup talk

12 April 2012

Soren Hansen has dismissed thoughts of the Ryder Cup as "silly", despite claiming his second European Tour victory in hugely impressive fashion in the Mercedes-Benz Championship.

The winner's cheque of £217,000 lifted the 33-year-old Dane to seventh on the Order of Merit and second in the fledgling Cup standings. But he was keen to keep a sense of perspective, despite admitting he is playing the best golf of his career.

"When I finished third at Gleneagles recently, after two second places earlier this season, I thought to myself this could be the year I go all the way to the top of the Order of Merit," said Hansen. "But to speak of the Ryder Cup at this moment is silly - because it is a year away, almost."

He added: "It is something I would really like to do. I'm in the Seve Trophy in a couple of weeks and I am really looking forward to that, to play that sort of team competition for the first time.

"There is a lot of golf to be played before the Ryder Cup - but if I continue to play the way I have been playing this summer there is no doubt I will be in the running for it.

"But golf is a funny thing. About three months ago, I was 124th in the Order of Merit and now I am seventh - so you have to keep that in perspective. It is good to try to keep your feet on the ground."
