Hamilton revels in number one status

12 April 2012

Lewis Hamilton feels having 'number one' on his McLaren next season will be "the coolest thing ever".

McLaren star Hamilton, 23, became the youngest world champion in Formula One history on Sunday.

"I have to admit it (winning the title) feels great, and I don't have to have number 22 on my car any more," said Hamilton. "I can have number one, and that's the coolest thing ever."

Meanwhile, McLaren boss Ron Dennis believes the momentum gained from Hamilton's "storybook" maiden world title will help propel him on to further championship triumphs.

"The chance of the momentum fading is very slim," said Dennis.

"But he has to have the car, and it is our intention to give it to him, so at the moment I can see no reason why the momentum of his career is going to falter.

"As has been apparent this year, he has become even more mature in and out of the car, and the experience gained from this (title win) is another stepping stone in his career.

"He is going to be very successful in his life, not only in racing, but as a human being because he is a thoroughly nice guy. What you see is what you get."
