Halsall through in record time

Fran Halsall powered into the semi-finals of the women's 100 metres freestyle, setting a new British record in the heats on Wednesday evening as she progressed to the next round.

Halsall touched the wall in a time of 53.93 seconds to finish first in her heat, well clear of Aleksandra Gerasimenya from Belorussia, and fifth overall, 0.39 secs behind fastest qualifier Hanna-Maria Seppala of Finland.

Gregor Tait was another British swimmer to progress to the next phase as he finished fifth overall after the heats of the 200m bacskstroke. The Scotsman was just outside his British record time, touching the wall in 1 minute 57.03 secs, while American duo Ryan Lochte and Aaron Peirsol - who share the world record time in the event - were the fastest qualifiers.

There was heartache for Kirsty Balfour in the 200m breaststroke after she failed to qualify for the semi-finals after posting a disappointing time of 2 mins 27.87 secs.

Earlier in the day McClatchey missed out on a medal in the 200m freestyle final despite posting a personal best time.

Italian Federica Pellegrini took gold in a time of 1:54.82, with McClatchey finishing down in sixth with a time 1:57.65, while Slovenia's Sara Isakovic claimed the silver ahead of home favourite Jiaying Pang.

Britain's quartet of David Carry, Andrew Hunter, Robert Renwick and Ross Davenport set a new British record of 7:05.92 when finishing sixth in the men's 4x200m relay

In the women's 200m butterfly, British pair Jemma Lowe and Ellen Gandy failed to qualify for Thursday's final, Lowe missing out by just 0.14s. The men's 200m breaststroke also saw Britain's Kristopher Gilchrist and Ireland's Andrew Bree both fail to qualify for Thursday's final.

Liam Tancock and James Goddard both progressed to the semi-finals of the 200m individual medley, with Goddard clocking a time 0.05s faster than his compatriot when he finished in 1:59.74.

But the biggest surprise of the evening came, however, when Great Britain's women failed to reach the final of the 4x200m freestyle relay. Despite featuring in the top three for most of the race, the British quartet slipped to sixth place in their heat and their time of 7:56.16 was only good enough to finish in ninth place.
