13 April 2012

Gregor Tait crowned his international debut with a British record of one minute 54.36 seconds in the 200 metres backstroke on day one of the European Short Course Championships in Antwerp.

The Scot, who represents the City of Edinburgh club, narrowly beat James Hickman's old mark and set the fastest time in the heats.

Tait said: "I don't want to sound bigheaded, but I did believe I could do it."

Former Commonwealth champion Adam Ruckwood, of Birmingham, also qualified for tonight's final.
